About BB BB & Air Rifle - The emphasis is on gun safety and marksmanship using a combination of classroom instruction and hands-on experience and covers many of the aspects of gun handling and knowledge that will be used in the other shooting disciplines. This program uses competition quality BB guns for junior members and air rifles for senior members. The state 4-H BB & Air Rifle championships are in March with the top three teams being invited to the nationals. Also, the air rifle team participates in the American Legion championship and several other shoots through out the year.
About Shotgun Shotgun - Club members participate in numerous shotgun events during the year. Member experience ranges from beginner through the very accomplished with many members shooting in events outside of the 4-H program during the year. The games of skeet, trap, 5-stand, and sporting clays will be covered.
About Smallbore Rifle Smallbore Rifle (.22) - Expanding out from the BB/AR programs, the smallbore rifle matches will include paper animal and bullseye targets and metal silhouettes.
About Archery Archery - During the year, members will have the opportunity to practice on paper and 3D targets while learning the mechanics of archery shooting.
Muzzleloading - A small number of the members participate in muzzleloading and there is interest in organizing a group to go to non 4-H tournaments in the area.
Outdoor Skills, Wildlife Identification, and Hunter Safety - These areas are covered during the year for several competitions in which we participate, including the Hunter Education Championship.
About Air Pistol Air Pistol - Practicing Air Pistol is just beginning in the club. Members have participated in the Air Pistol event in the Virginia Air competition. Other events that can be shot with Air Pistol are silhouette and Timed and Rapid Fire.
About Progressive Air Pistol Progressive Air Pistol - Progressive Air Pistol is an event aiming at getting all ages involved. Shooters may progress through various stages and may compete in any one of these stages. The different positions are two-handed sitting with gun rest, two-handed sitting, two-handed standing, and then one-handed standing, which is standard Air Pistol.
About Smallbore Pistol Smallbore Pistol - Smallbore Pistol is an event emerging in 4-H for senior members. This event is now an option in the State 4-H Shoot. As far as practices go, there are no set club practices for this event but members could shoot .22 pistol during a .22 rifle practice.
Funds & Fundraising - There are no dues for the club. Most of the targets and some of the ammunition is provided by the club. The equipment has been purchased over time with available funds and more recently with grants from the Friends of the NRA. The club also hosted its first sporting clay fundraiser this past year, and with the help of local business sponsors we were able to raise needed funds for the club to purchase additional equipment and supplies. We need participation at fundraising events and ideas for new fundraising events.

Grants - Our club has received funds from the NRA by Friends of NRA committees in Virginia. Thank you NRA.
Parents are encouraged to help Parental Participation - Parents are encourage to participate with their child. With many sports, participation is limited unless you are an on-field coach. In shooting sports there are opportunities to participate side-by-side with your child, particularly if you are a certified instructor.
Awards - As individuals and as club members and team members, the Appomattox 4-H Shooting Education Program has won numerous local, state, and national championships since it was formed in 1988. The club also uses the NRA Award Qualification Program and has awarded twenty-nine Distinguished Expert Awards.
